Thank you for your interest in the 9th annual Scalpel Undergraduate Surgical Conference. Â A complete programme detailing the minute-by-minute timetable of the day will be available in October. Â We can, however, share with you the exciting list of speakers and workshops that will be available on the day!
Keynote Speakers
For 2017, both of our speakers have established themselves as impressive entrepreneurs of medical technology.  We are pleased to announce that we have the following confirmed speakers:
Mr Manoj Ramachandran – Consultant Paediatric and Young Adult Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the Royal London and Barts & The London Children’s Hospitals, London, and Honorary Reader and Director of Clinical Strategy in the Institute of Bioengineering, Queen Mary University, University of London, England.
He undertook clinical and research fellowships in Sydney, Los Angeles and London. His main research interests are in paediatric and young adult bone and joint disease and trauma, cartilage and innovative and translational clinical trials.
His other passions are entrepreneurship, digital health, medical technology and devices, and medical education. His most recent start-up is in artificial intelligence and medical imaging – Viz.ai. See more at manoj.strikingly.com
Dr Elliot Street – Managing Director and Co-founder of Inovus Medical
Co-founder and Managing Director of Inovus Medical, a leading designer and manufacturer of medical and surgical stimulators and medical devices. Elliot started Inovus from his student bedroom during his final year at Manchester Medical School.
Following graduation he completed his foundation training in the Oxford deanery where he worked at the prestigious John Radcliffe Hospital.
After his foundation training Dr Street moved to a full time role with Inovus; a move that has seen the company enjoy significant growth in revenue and global reach.
Inovus’ products are now in over 50% of NHS Trusts and over 35 countries worldwide. Industry customers include some of the largest medical device companies in the world including Olympus, Metronic, Bard and Cook Medical. Recent highlights for Dr Street and Inovus include the move to new headquarters in St Helens and his shortlisting for the ACW entrepreneur of the year award.
Practical Workshops
There will also be an extensive range of practical and academic workshops to choose from. Â Delegates may choose two practical workshops from the following:
Skin Flaps
Introduction into skin flap reconstruction, looking at closure techniques of large wounds with aesthetics in mind.
Requirements: No experienced needed
Laparoscopy
Practice on simulators to develop your spatial awareness skills and learn key-hole surgery principles!
Requirements: No experienced needed
Vascular Anastomosis
Requirements: No experience needed
Basic Suturing
An introduction to surgical bread and butter. Â For anyone with no experience or if you want to refresh your memory.
Requirements: No experience needed
Advanced Suturing
Push yourself and expand your skill set with harder surgical suture techniques.
Requirements: Some knowledge and familiarity of basic suturing is required
Knot Tying
A basic but essential skill that all surgeons need to master. Â This workshop teaches a range of applications and types of surgical hand ties.
Requirements: No experience needed
Academic Workshops
Along with the two practical workshops, delegates may choose one academic workshop to attend. Â The choices are below.

There is also the opportunity for delegates to submit an abstract in the form of research, case report, audit, literature review, or poster, to present at the conference.  All presentations will be judged by a select panel of senior surgeons with prizes given for the top three presentations.  Abstract submission is open till the 4th October.
